Directing prayers toward Jerusalem is an ancient custom first practiced by King Solomon (1 KINGS, 8:48) and later by Daniel, (6:11). Thus, the sanctity and special status of Jerusalem, as the heart and soul of Jewish existence, has been revered, acknowledged and reaffirmed daily by Jews for over 3000 years.
Traditionally, when displayed in the synagogue or at home, the “Mizrach” is placed on the Eastern wall in the direction of Jerusalem.
The sun rises as the intricately painted Mizrach “blesses” the ancient, walled city of Jerusalem. The print is silk-screened in 31 colors with a background of gold and copper.
