Directing prayers toward Jerusalem is an ancient custom first practiced by King Solomon (1 KINGS, 8:48) and later by Daniel, (6:11). Thus, the sanctity and special status of Jerusalem, as the heart and soul of Jewish existence, has been revered, acknowledged and reaffirmed daily by Jews for over 3000 years.
Traditionally, when displayed in the synagogue or at home, the “Mizrach” is placed on the Eastern wall in the direction of Jerusalem.
The word Mizrach is painted in glowing colors against a background depicting the hills of ancient Jerusalem at night.
